Welcome to Derwent Valley Donkey Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary is based in Derbyshire and was established well over forty years ago. During this time it has gained an excellent reputation for rescuing animals in need and in 2009 it won the Community Champions Award for the outstanding rescue work it does, as well as helping and advising others how to manage their pets.
Most of our animals are rescued from neglect, cruelty, the meat trade and from owners who are unable to cope. When animals come to the Sanctuary they are examined by the vet, farrier, dentist and, on occasions, an animal behaviourist. Some creatures are mentally and physically scarred and in very poor condition, when long term urgent treatment is often required which can be needed for a long time. No animal is put to sleep unless the vet advises to do so.
Occasionally we find suitable foster homes which are checked and vetted to ensure the animals enjoy the best standard of care.
The Sanctuary costs are very high and a lot of hard work is involved but these animals deserve a second chance in a loving environment. We are so grateful for all fund raising and donations that help with our expenses (eg food, bedding, veterinary/farrier/dentist bills etc etc).
